Pedorthic Solutions

Althea PowellAlthea Powell-Chandler, C. Ped
Powell Shoes
Vero Beach, FL

Condition Description:

One of the great joys of being a Pedorthist is giving hope to a patient/customer whom otherwise have had failed attempts at finding suitable footwear.

Male patient presented with the following:

  • Bi-lateral pes planus feet, severe edema on the right leg, ankle and dorsum of foot along with excessive hyperkeratosis on the planter aspect of each foot.
  • He came in wearing flip flops as this was the only footwear he could find that fit, they of course provided no support for his feet, he was evaluated and casted for a pair custom molded shoes which was his only option.
  • His shoes were each made to accommodate his feet as they are, with some of the following features, deep toe box and vamp, surgical opening on the right.
  • Pictures highlight the severity of his Pedorthic needs and the final outcome.

Dear PFA members...

Posted By Administration, Tuesday, December 31, 2019
Pres Pic As I sit here in my office and reflect on 2019, I can’t help but wonder where the time has gone. It seems that only yesterday, I was beginning my discussions with the Board of Directors on the planning of the Annual Symposium and making plans for all the tasks we wanted to tackle in the new year.

Well, the symposium is over, our goals and objectives for 2019 have all been tackled, and now we are well into the planning for 2020. We have increased our membership and our social media presence, increased our symposium revenues and attendance numbers, and improved our member benefits’ programs. All in all, a great year for the PFA! We could not have done any of this without you, our members. You are the ones that helped us achieve these goals and improve the organization.

As we (have) closed out 2019, here is a big Thank You from all of us at PFA’s headquarters and the Board of Directors! We are excited for what 2020 is going to produce next for PFA and our members. In closing, from all of us at the PFA, we wish you the happiest of holidays this season. We look forward to continued growth and prosperity for our members and as an organization in the New Year.

I hope you have a Happy Holiday Season and a Wonderful Start to 2020!

My first introduction to Pedorthics was through the Durable Medical Equipment (DME) world. I started out in Sales and was also trained as a shoe fitter for diabetic shoes.

At that time there were only two individuals in the company that I worked for that were shoe fitters and certified in pedorthics. Within the first week I figured out there was more to fitting medical shoes than I could imagine. I knew I needed to educate myself to provide the service my clients deserved. These clients could not be fit with shoes that were off the shelf, they needed more for their disabled feet.

I reached out to one of the pedorthists on staff. She told me about the Pedorthic Footcare Association (PFA) and advised me to contact them for educational materials.

I contacted the Pedorthic Footcare Association and was advised to start out with two books; “Introduction to Pedorthics” and “Contemporary Pedorthics” so I made the investment.
