How do I become a Credentialed Pedorthist?

Upon completion of pedorthic schooling, students are required to complete 1,000 hours of practical experience. The final stage is taking the ABC or BOC examination.

For more information see FAQ on licensure and links to the ABC website, the BOC website the NCOPE website or PFA's Pedorthic Educational Programs.

ABC vs BOC vs Licensure regulations:

American Board for Certification in Orthotics, Prosthetics & Pedorthics (ABC)
  1. What is the difference between a Licensed Pedorthist and a Certified Pedorthist?
    • Licensure from State to State can vary on scopes of practice but licensure is more stringent than certification.

  2. What is the difference between being BOC certified and ABC certified? Is one more comprehensive? How many other organizations certify “Pedorthist”?
    • BOC Pedorthist scope of practices is greater than the ABC pedorthist scope of practice. Currently two organizations credential pedorthists.

  3. Do all the organizations fall under PFA's umbrella or are they independent?
    • Certification and credentialing organizations are independent from PFA. Our primary responsibility is serving pedorthists and all that they stand for.

  4. How often do licenses and/or certifications need to be renewed?
    • Licensure renewal is generally every two years and certification renewals every three years.
