Son of Immigrants


Matthew Mirones (born April 24, 1956), a former president of the Pedorthic Footcare Association (1995-1997), has enjoyed a varied career that includes making positive effects in government, health care and the community.

Mirones is the son of immigrants from the island of Chios in Greece. His father was a shoemaker. Mirones is Greek-American and lived in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn before relocating to the Grasmere section of Staten Island, both of which were located within his Assembly district.

As a allied health care practitioner, Mirones received a B.S. in Prosthetics and Orthotics from New York University Medical School.

A former New York State Assemblyman, Mr. Mirones served three terms in the state legislature, where he became vice chairman of the Republican Assembly Conference and the ranking member of the Assembly’s Mental Health and Developmental Disabilities Committee.

He also served on four additional committees that included the Health, Transportation, Cities & Corporations, Authorities & Commissions, as well as the legislative Task Force for People with Disabilities.

 

 

 

 

 


Business Owner


Mirones owns ARIMED Orthotics and Prosthetics, a medical supply company with his brother Steven Mirones. Based in New York City with offices in Manhattan, Brooklyn, Staten Island and the Bronx, Arimed features American Board-Certified orthotists, prosthetists and pedorthists, professional orthopedic fitters and technicians, and an on-site laboratory and technical staff, which enable the firm to quickly and effectively create and fine-tune patient care devices.

Health Care Provider


As a health care provider, Mr. Mirones has more than 35 years of experience in the orthopedic rehabilitation field and was one of the first recipients of pedorthic certification in 1974.

Every day, Americans are confronted with news of horrors throughout the world which seem both vividly intimate and impossibly distant; helpless outrage is a characteristic emotion of the global age. On an October afternoon three years ago, a New Yorker named Matthew Mirones was glancing through the Times' Week in Review section when he came upon a photo essay on war amputees in Freetown, the capital of Sierra Leone, on the West African coast. A boy, his right arm gone to the shoulder, was being bathed by his mother. A man, missing both hands, was trying to write his name with the hook of an artificial arm. A teen-age girl, also a double amputee, was lying at the water's edge with her stumps glistening in the surf. Mirones, who had never heard of this war—and had barely heard of Sierra Leone—felt the hair on his arms stand up...
