Description: This course is designed as an advanced pedorthics educational series with objectives being to elevate the skill-enhancing abilities to problem solve, use deductive reasoning, and apply advanced biomechanical theory. Shane Hayes, C.Ped, who has served the industry for more than four decades with clinical experiences specializing in advanced techniques for chronic and unresolved pathologies, will teach this “Real World” course. Mr. Hayes is the owner of Shane’s Foot Comfort Center in Seattle and a winner of the highest national pedorthics honor, the Semour Lefton Award; as well as a past-president of the Pedorthic Footwear Association (PFA). This course is designed to systematically improve the understanding of / or achieve a higher level of mastery of the necessary skills for advanced pedorthics. An applied patient assessment is incorporated within the course to aid in accurately formulating a biomechanically engineered foot orthosis, ankle foot orthosis and footwear to meet the patient’s individual needs. The course is highly recommended for the prevention-driven practitioner as well as practitioners treating chronic or unresolved foot pathologies.

A Scholarship Fund is available and offered by the Heather Moore Bernard Scholarship Fund for Certified Pedorthists (C.Ped) who work in a shoe store.

Approved for 16.5 CEUs by the BOC; and 12 MC by the OPC.
Approved for 16.5 CEUs by the ABC for CEU credits.

On October 1, 2015, International Classification of Diseases, Version 10 Clinical Modification is going live in the United States healthcare markets.  These are the diagnosis codes that are required when billing any type of insurance, and they are TOTALLY different from the version 9 that we have used in the past years.
PFA is pleased to announce that Dr. David J. Friedman, DPM, Certified Professional Coder, Certified Professional Medical Auditor in preparing and educating users of IDC-10, will be conducting a two-part Webinar for PFA members and related healthcare professionals.

Course Descriptions:

Webinar 1:  ICD-10 Coding for Pedorthists/Part 1
Learning Objectives:

  • Brief history and structure of Version 10.
  • Medical coding hotspots.
  • An overview of the lower extremity codes.

Webinar 2:  Overview of ICD-9 to ICD-10/Part 2
Learning Objectives:
  • Review and changes from ICD-9 to ICD 10 with coding, mapping and code set translation.
  • Understanding initial, subsequent and Sequelae coding.
  • Complex coding for trauma, etc.  Understanding the syntax behind the new codes.

Thirty-five of the most common pedorthically related codes will be presented in the live webinars.
In addition, Dr. Friedman has prepared a conversion tool subscription program that will translate the diagnosis into correct ICD-10 format for participants to sign-up for if they so desire.  This tool has an annual update available.
