Final Durable Medical Equipment, Prosthetics, Orthotics, and Supplies (DMEPOS) Quality Standards for Therapeutic Shoes Inserts (1/09/2018)

On November 28, 2017, CMS held a Special Open-Door Forum to discuss proposed revisions to the definitions of Custom Fabricated and Therapeutic Inserts located in Appendix C of the DMEPOS Quality Standards. Commenters sent suggestions on the proposed revisions to the ReducingProviderBurden@cms.hhs.gov email address by December 11, 2017. In total, we received approximately 87 responses. Of these 87, 74 generally supported the changes to the Quality Standards. About seven individual comments requested wording changes to the proposed Quality Standards. The remaining comments (approximately 306) concerned the coding and monetary value decisions yet to be made by CMS.
Based on the comments, CMS finalized the DMEPOS Quality Standards with one minor change. Specifically, we included reference to the use of “foam box impressions”. The Final DMEPOS Quality Standards are effective January 9, 2018. The Final DMEPOS Quality Standards and a document summarizing the comments and our responses are below.
