PFA's 2014 Legislative and Regulatory Lobbying Agenda
  • Continue advocacy efforts with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) aimed at positioning pedorthists as the qualified suppliers under Medicare's Therapeutic Shoes for Persons with Diabetes (TSD) benefit based on the precept that pedorthists, unlike other allied healthcare providers, are uniquely trained and educated to evaluate, design, fit, fabricate and dispense shoes and inserts.  A positive consequence of this effort, will be to level the playing field between pedorthics and O & P within CMS, and provide equitable application of regulations across the board.
  • Work with the PDAC as it moves forward with a comprehensive TSD HCPCS coding review and the creation of a definition for a medical grade shoe.
  • Meet on a regular basis with other allied healthcare associations on government affairs issues and pursue reciprocal participation at annual conferences with speaker and exhibitor opportunities.
  • Meet regularly with key Members of Congress and their staff, as well as applicable regulatory agencies, to educate them about the pedorthic profession and its role in allied healthcare.
  • Encourage the development of state pedorthic organzations to provide a unified voice for the profession at the state level.
  • Continue to utilize PFA's Coding Committee to assist members in interpreting HCPCS Level II codes that are appropriate to credentialed pedorthists and match devices to the appropriate codes.
  • Work with the PDAC relative to PFA's suggested changes to the TSD Local Coverage Determination (LCD).
  • Advance state pedorthic licensure legislation, to include reciprocity, by increasing awareness of the issue in state capitals when requested by PFA members in those states considering pedorthic licensure legislation.
