PFA Holds Successful 2005 Briefing on Capitol Hill

On November 2 PFA, along with the Wound Ostomy Continence Nurses Society (WOCN) held a briefing on Capitol Hill for Members of Congress and their staff.  The briefing, sponsored by Rep. Carolyn McCarthy (NY-4), was held to increase the awareness of the practice of pedorthics, as well as Medicare's Therapeutic Shoes for Persons with Diabetes benefit (TSD – pedorthics sole connection to the federal government) amongst the nation's decision makers.  Also discussed was the cooperative role in the healthcare continuum played by pedorthic practitioners and wound ostomy continence nurses.

Representing PFA on the discussion panel was Brett Richey, who hit home the crucial fact that, unlike other healthcare practitioners who are involved in conservative foot care along with other components of a practice, pedorthics is all that pedorthists do.  Richey added that, if the Medicare benefit were to disappear tomorrow, pedorthists would still be practicing and providing the crucial services that they have always provided, unlike some other allied healthcare fields who have become involved in pedorthics as an adjunct to their existing practice.
